OK, so what actually is combination skin? It’s when complexions have the characteristics of both oily and dry skin—most commonly oily in the T-zone and dry or balanced elsewhere. Trying to balance two such different skin types may seem challenging but it’s easier than you think. It’s possible that your current skincare routine could be contributing to your combination skin or making the unbalanced areas worse. If you’re using oil-control or mattifying formulations across your face—on the dry patches too, this can irritate and inflame more sensitive areas, depriving them of the moisture they need. And too much moisture in oily areas can lead to breakouts.
The secret to combination skincare is caring for the different parts of your face differently, and knowing when and how to layer the right products. Seeing your complexion in zones will help you tailor treatments to specific areas. For oily skin zones use lightweight lotions or gels that have acne-fighting and pore-reducing properties. For the dry areas use rich, hydrating serums and face creams to deliver moisture and skin-softening ingredients. When it comes to cleansing, look to cleansers that are crafted for combination skin specifically. And, for suncare, physical sunscreens containing zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are best as they won’t block pores and are gentle enough for sensitive and dry skin.
